Lapland seasons - it’s all about snow!

The arctic winter and snow transforms everything in Lapland. A beautiful white blanket covers the landscape while forests fall silent, waters freeze and the sky has a soft blue shade. With snow also comes freezing temperatures and cold breeze. Here’s everything you need to know about snow in Lapland!

When will it snow in Lapland?

First snowfall in Lapland can start as early as September, but usually it starts in October. First snow can cover as much as 20 cm (8 inches), which is a lot for first snow. Normally Lapland has 50-60 cm of snow, even 150 cm at best. On average you will find more snow the more North you go. The first snow fall marks the start of Lappish winter, which brings a lot of excitement with it.

How long does the winter season last?

Snow typically stays on the ground from late October all the way to the spring in April. It’s more than half of the year! Snow is a weather condition, which means that it varies from year to year and it does not always arrive at the same time each year either. But since most of Lapland is located above the Arctic Circle, it does usually have most of the snow for the longest time in Finland.

Warm and soft layers under proper winter outdoor clothing are essential. Adding some wind-proofing with scarfs and insulating clothing also helps a lot.
