The magic of Christmas in Lapland

Christmas is maybe the most magical time to visit Lapland since the atmosphere changes with the Christmas season! Explore the smell of pine trees, crisp winter air and shimmering snow to really get into the Christmas spirit.

Fell the Christmas spirit

In Lapland, Christmas is not just a holiday! It is also a feeling. The feeling of Christmas spirit, with the quiet atmosphere, starry night sky, twinkly lights in the snowy landscape and the child-like excitement. If you want to experience the total Christmas spirit with the magical feeling, Lapland is the place for it! On clear nights, even northern lights can appear.

The home of Santa Claus

Lapland is not just another winter destination, but the actual home of Santa Claus! His office is located in Rovaniemi, but you can also visit his childhood cabin in Levi. Meeting Santa is the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit!

If you are visiting Levi but still want to also visit Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, the drive is only 2 hours and there are many buses that operate the route too. Visiting the village is also free!

Festive traditions and local culture

Christmas in Finland means slowing down and enjoying the simple pleasures of life: good food, moments with loved-ones and cozy feelings. Stores close early and the roads get quiet, while everyone seeks comfort from their warm cabins.

Finnish Christmas food is traditional and rich: the heart of it all is oven-baked ham, vegetable casseroles and the ultimate Christmas drink, glögi. Some also enjoy different types of fishes, like cold-smoked salmon paired with some rye bread and dill.

So cozy up in your cabin, light up some candles or fireplace and get your hands on some traditional Finnish Christmas dinner! There are also some traditional shows on TV, you can enjoy while sipping some hot chocolate under a blanket on Christmas morning.

Snowy activities for your Christmas day

After a slow relaxing morning, you can head to some ski trails or slopes. Even reindeer rides wrapped in warm blankets as the only sounds were the gentle bells and the crunch of hooves on snow can feel extra special on a Christmas day! Some other great ways to spend the day are ice fishing, snowshoe hiking or snowmobiling.

Lapland offers great activity opportunities close to nature. Walking in snow while listening to the crunch of snow under your boots while the twilight paints the atmosphere in soft blue, is a perfect way to end the day.

After an eventful day, the best way to fully relax is sauna. In the evening some rice porridge and gingerbread cookies by the fireplace really bring together the Christmas feeling!
