What to wear in Lapland in December

You have probably already heard about the Arctic cold and polar night, but we want to emphasize the kind of winter clothing needed especially during Lapland’s peak-seasons! We have already made a guide on “How to dress up for different temperatures”, which can also be helpful to you. Now we want to explain polar nights and short daylights so you can prepare for your Lapland trip without overpacking!

Lapland weather in December

In December Lapland is almost guaranteed to have snow and freezing temperatures with the average temperature around –5°C to –20°C. Sometimes it can drop even below –30°C, which is exactly why it is crucial to have the right clothing!

The wind and humidity makes it feel even worse, without the right gear. Wind makes the temperature feel even colder than it actually is and the dry cold air makes your lips and skin dry quickly too. To ease this problem you should consider a woolen scarf and lip balm! The cold in Lapland is more usually just dry and bearable in the right gear, compared to damp winter weather in cities like London.

The winter clothing for different activities and exploring can be rented affordably from us! We offer the LuxJa bundle, which includes: Joutsen Down jacket, Jack Wolfskin Down Pants, Hestra Gloves & Moon Boots. We also offer a coveralls bundle, which includes: Anar Dalvi coveralls, Moon Boots and warm Hestra Gloves. These bundles also include a merino wool beanie, which you can keep after your adventures in Lapland!

In case you need some additional gear, we offer a LuxJa backpack and Joutsen Unelma down poncho.

Polar nights and hours of daylight in Lapland

Polar nights are one of the most unique things about Lapland in December. It means the opposite of midnight sun, which basically means absolute darkness. But Lapland still has some daylight for a couple hours a day! Most of the days have a blue twilight, which is like a low sunrise or sunset.

The changes in daylight can be tricky for photographers, but if you catch the right moment the pictures can be phenomenal!
